After prolonged negotiations, Benfica and Real Madrid are finalizing the transfer of Carreras, which will see the full-back return to the Spanish capital and join Los Blancos in time for the revamped FIFA Club World Cup starting June 14, according to a report from

Despite Real Madrid's efforts to negotiate a lower fee, Benfica held firm on their financial terms. Ultimately, the Spanish giants agreed to meet the full value of the player’s release clause, worth €50 million (£42m/$57m). The agreement will allow Carreras to participate in the Club World Cup under the new Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso’s management.

Madrid had hoped to conclude the deal last week to prevent Carreras from rejoining Benfica's pre-season training. However, the Lisbon outfit’s firm stance delayed proceedings.
